While CacaLoco continues to produce
some seasoned and sophisticated
soil supplements, we have responded to local demands
for a cheaper, less cultivated product. Composed of wood fiber animal
bedding from stables in the Aspen area, this relatively raw material
largely retains its sawdust yellow color giving it the name of 'Aspen
Blonde Bedding Material'. Because it's only slightly cultivated (stacked,
quickly heated, turned once, then trucked), it is an extremely hot
mulch and can be caustic or even volatile if improperly handled. Direct
contact with bare root stock, for instance, generally results in a
sudden growth spurt followed by severe wilting or even acute epinasty.
It should be considered a high maintenance product requiring numerous
supplements as it has nothing to offer but raw organic matter and the
ability to retain water. Being completely unrefined, it requires excessive
preparation, but spreads easily, lays nicely and is beautiful for bedding.
Gardeners find it hard to resist the allure of this hot, fertile product.
Fortunately, it is readily available for easy pick-up.
